Knit the Aria Cowl

Knit the Aria Cowl

When I saw Casey, from Premknits, post a story about a yarn she just dyed up called “Fairy Wings” all I could think about was my daughter. I had to have that yarn! It was Aria, to a T.  I wanted a stitch that pops, but doesn’t get lost in the fun of the yarn. So I dug around for stitches to try and I settled on this final design using the Sand Stitch. It’s simple, yet the texture looks like it required effort. The knit Aria Cowl flies right off the needles in no time.

I have designed the Aria Cowl in two sizes. I'll be sharing the size small (which fits kids through smaller adults). It's a little more close fitting on an adult. The paid PDF version will include a size Medium, which will give a little bit more of a relaxed fits and will fit all adults.

Supplies Needed

Needle Size: US 11/8mm 16″ circular needles

Yarn Used: Premknits Bulky in “Fairy Wings” 92 – 108 yards

Note about yarn: Premknits Bulky is a thick and squishy bulky yarn, please know that not all Bulky yarns are created this way. For example, yarns like Lion Brand Scarfie or Caron x Pantone are on the lighter side of Bulky. This pattern was created using the “squishier” bulky yarn. Loops & Threads Charisma is a good example. You need to be sure to meet gauge for this pattern or your cowl is going to come out far too small.

Stitch Abbreviations

K – Knit

P – Purl

Gauge and Blocking: 10 sts x 16 rows (stockinette stitch)

When I blocked the Superwash Wool version I lost a lot of the definition and texture going on in the yarn and the cowl got far too wide. I couldn’t stand it and wouldn’t even let my daughter wear it until I figured out what to do. In the end, I ripped it out and redid the whole thing. This time I left it alone. Therefore, I do not recommend blocking this cowl when complete. Just enjoy the squishy final texture.
